When bed bugs are suspected, Freedom Pest Control can send a specially trained bed bug scent detection K9 team consisting of a handler and dog, along with our technician, to inspect your home.

The Canine Scent Detection Team ultized by Freedom Pest Control is certified by the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (NESDCA) and the Integrated Bed Bug Management Association (IBBMA). These certifications ensure that canines and handlers meet the highest standards of detector dog team performance in the industry in accordance with the standards outlined in the NPMA Best Management Practices.

The Canine Bed Bug Scent Detection Team’s dogs can perform a bed bug scent detection inspection much faster than a human without damage to furnishings and without distruptions.

The dogs are trained to detect even just one live bed bug!

Video 1 – Bed Bug Canine Detection:

Start of Search and Indication

Video 2 – Bed Bug Canine Detection:

Scent Pooling
Room conditions can impact the concentration of the scent of live bed bugs, creating “scent pools.” The effective handler will recognize each room’s unique conditions. Produced by UF/IFAS Entomology and Nematology Department.

During the canine handling team’s training, the dog and handler are required to find a single live bed bug and viable egg in a variety of settings such as homes, apartments, hotel rooms, office buildings, retail stores, daycare centers, college dormitories, vehicles, movie theaters and more.

To avoid confusion, the dogs are not trained to find dead bed bugs. Distractors such as dead bugs, skin casts, other insects and odors are used.
