Flying Squirrel Facts
- The flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) is one of two species of the genus Glaucomys, the only flying squirrels found in North America. The flying squirrel is found in coniferous and mixed forests across the top of North America, from Alaska to Nova Scotia, south to North Carolina and west to California.
- The nocturnal, arboreal rodents have thick light brown or cinnamon fur on their upper body, with a furry membrane which extends between the front and rear leg that allows the animal to glide through the air. It’s greyish on the flanks and whitish underneath. They have large eyes and a flat tail. They can also be identified by their long whiskers, common to nocturnal mammals. The adult flying squirrel measures from 25 to 37 cm long, and their weight can range from 110 to 230 grams.
Do Squirrels Have Rabies?
Most squirrels, including Flying squirrels, Red squirrels, and Gray squirrels, do not carry rabies. However, since they are a wild animal, it is impossible to know for sure. You never want to get close enough to a squirrel to be bitten, because if you get bitten, you may need to receive injections for rabies as a preventative measure, unless you catch the squirrel that bit you and it tests negative for rabies.
Damage to Your Home
Squirrels can damage your home when they attempt to make a nest in your attic or inside the walls. The nesting materials they bring in can cause a fire hazard, and their feces and urine are considered a biohazard. Catching one or more squirrels that have been nesting in your home can be difficult, since most traps and poisons do not work and may create an even more significant problem, such as exposing your pets and children to poison.
When to Call a Pest Control Professional
If you suspect that a Flying squirrel has nested somewhere in your home, don’t wait to take action. Contact a pest control professional as soon as possible to get help removing the squirrel safely, humanely and effectively. A professional can also help you identify possible ways that the squirrel may have gotten in and can make recommendations on how to seal those areas to keep additional squirrels from getting in your home.
