Red Squirrel Facts
- The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is one of two species of tree squirrel currently classified in the genus Tamiasciurus and known as pine squirrels. The diet of these tree squirrels is specialized on the seeds of conifer cones. As such, they are widely distributed across North America wherever conifers are common, except on the Pacific coasts.
- Red squirrels can be easily identified from other North American tree squirrels by their smaller size, territorial behavior and reddish fur with a white venter (under-belly). Red squirrels are also somewhat larger than chipmunks.
How Red Squirrels Damage the Home
Although Red Squirrels rarely have rabies, it’s still important to be cautious around them, since they are a wild animal. It can be extremely difficult to tell if a squirrel or other wild animal has rabies until it is too late.
Often, these squirrels can get into the home through small openings on the outside, and may chew the opening to make it larger so they can fit through it. They can take up residence in the attic or in crawlspaces, and often bring in nesting material from the outside, like leaves, twigs, and dry grass. This can pose a fire hazard and Red squirrel nests should be eliminated as soon as possible.
Additionally, like other squirrel species, the urine and feces of an Red squirrel is not something you want in your home. Not only does it have an unpleasant smell, it can create a biohazard in your house. It is highly recommended that if you have squirrels in your home, that those areas be decontaminated after the squirrels have been removed.
