What are spiders?

Spiders are pests that most people would rather avoid running into regularly. Their quick movements, many legs, and multiple eyes cause us to be startled by these pests when we spend time outside in our yards or homes.Large Spider
Dealing with spiders is difficult because while we don’t want to see them, we also don’t want them eradicated from the planet. These organisms play an important part in the ecosystem and help to control populations of nuisance insects. Without spiders and other predators, insects would overtake our homes, yards, gardens, and farms.

Though spiders are important, they shouldn’t be allowed to take over our spaces, especially our homes and businesses. Steps should always be taken to eliminate large populations of spiders and control their numbers.

Are spiders dangerous?

Spiders are shy, reclusive creatures that do their best to stay out of sight of people. Contact with spiders is typically accidental because they like to stay so hidden. Spiders aren’t aggressive, but they will defend themselves by biting if they feel threatened or about to be squished — but can we really blame them?

Most times, spider bites result in a red welt and a slight bit of pain but don’t pose substantial health threats. A positive when it comes to spiders is that most spiders living in the United States are harmless, and their venom isn’t strong enough to affect people.

Why do I have a spider problem?

While coming across spiders in your yards while gardening, mowing, or just hanging out on your deck isn’t fun, coming across them in your home, especially in large numbers, is even less of a good time!  When it comes to spiders, most of us will experience a problem with them at one time or another. Our yards make perfect habitats for spiders and the insects they like to feed on.

Where will I find spiders?

Spiders that are living in your home most likely found their way inside while following their prey. When insects move indoors to escape harsh weather or while foraging for food, spiders are common to follow them. Once inside, as long as there is prey to hunt, they will stay in your home. Spiders will also move indoors to find a sheltered spot to lay their eggs.

Inside of our homes, spiders hang out in various areas, including basements, crawlspaces, closets, cabinets, the corners of rooms, and in bathrooms around showers and sinks.

The more insect activity you have on your property in general, the more spider activity you will likely experience.

How can I prevent spiders in the future?

Keeping spiders away from your New England home involves not only managing the pest populations they prey on but also taking some preventive steps:

  • If you find spiders or spider webs in your home, use a vacuum to remove them.
  • Make sure screens are secure and in place in windows and doors.
  • Eliminate access points by sealing cracks in the foundation and gaps around vents, windows, and doors and repair roof damage.
  • Keep storage areas organized and free of clutter. This will eliminate spaces that spiders can hide out of sight in your home.
  • Place covers over vents and chimneys.
  • Inspect firewood, potted plants, and anything else you bring inside from the outside for spiders.
  • Keep lids on trash cans and recycling bins to keep hungry insects from being attracted to your property.
